Water only comes as H 2O and you can only use whole formula units of it. The coefficient goes at the beginning of a formula, not in the middle, as in this example: So, it's not the answer to the question that was asked.Ģ) You CANNOT place a coefficient in the middle of a formula. H 2O 2 is a completely different substance from H 2O. True, this is a balanced equation, but you have changed the substances in it. You cannot change the oxygen's subscript in water from one to two, as in: To fix this, we place a two in front of the hydrogen on the left side. However, this causes the hydrogen to become unbalanced. We put a two in front of the water and this balances the oxygen. The hydrogen are balanced, but the oxygens are not. Now, back to balancing the example equation: The coefficient of three times the 6 gives the final answer of 18. The 3 on the nitrate times 2 outside the parenthesis equals 6 oxygen in one formula unit. (d) 3Ca(NO 3) 2 (just the oxygens) -> There are 18. (c) 2(NH 4) 2S -> there are 2 x 1 x 2 atoms of nitrogen (a total of 4), there are 2 x 4 x 2 atoms of hydrogen (a total of 16), and 2 x 1 atoms of sulfur (a total of 2). (b) 2H 2O -> there are 2 x 2 atoms of hydrogen (a total of 4) and 2 x 1 atoms of oxygen (a total of 2). (a) 2H 2 -> there are 2 x 2 atoms of hydrogen (a total of 4). Important point: the coefficient times the subscript gives the total number of atoms.įour examples before balancing the equation. It is important to note that only the coefficients can be changed, NEVER a subscript. Remember this: A balanced equation MUST have EQUAL numbers of EACH type of atom on BOTH sides of the arrow.Īn equation is balanced by changing coefficients in a somewhat trial-and-error fashion. In the example equation, there are two atoms of hydrogen on each side, BUT there are two atoms of oxygen on the left side and only one on the right side. Presenting it as being balanced would be wrong. By the way, a skeleton equation is not wrong, it just hasn't been balanced yet. This means that there are UNEQUAL numbers at least one atom on each side of the arrow. It is an unbalanced equation (sometimes also called a skeleton equation). Therefore, we must finish our chemical reaction with as many atoms of each element as when we started.Įxample #1: Balance the following equation: H 2 + O 2 -> H 2O "Matter is neither created nor destroyed." "We may lay it down as an incontestible axiom, that, in all the operations of art and nature, nothing is created an equal quantity of matter exists both before and after the experiment the quality and quantity of the elements remain precisely the same and nothing takes place beyond changes and modifications in the combination of these elements." The law was discovered by Antoine Laurent Lavoisier (1743-94) and this is his formulation of it, translated into English in 1790 from the Traité élémentaire de Chimie (which was published in 1789): The Law of Conservation of Mass is the rationale for balancing a chemical equation. IMPORTANT DEFINITION: A balanced equation has equal numbers of each type of atom on each side of the equation. Making sure they are balanced must be done before the equation can be used in any chemically meaningful way.Īll chemical calculations you will see in other units must be done with a balanced equation. You get the chance to review them and even use built-in highlighting tools to mark them, freely draw on them via the pen tool, or even place some of the available overlay shapes (a wide variation of arrows, rectangles, circles, and more). The captured snips are not just saved to your local storage immediately. It can enable anyone to set up their real-time or delayed capture of the entire or predefined desktop area. To provide the service that many users desire, Free Snipping Desktop Tool comes with its own feature set. While Windows 7 OS (and all newer versions) has a built-in tool for full desktop and area snipping tool for quick capture of screenshots, many users have expressed a need for a bit more comprehensive toolset for managing more advanced types of capture and additional options for screenshot sharing. In addition to the local image saving, the app also has built-in support for several major cloud storage locations (including Dropbox, Google Drive, and WebRequest), an automatically generated shareable link, and even advanced support for the automatic sending of captured desktop area images to FTP server of your choice. Impressive stuff which deserves a wide audience.Snipping Tool is an easy-to-use graphic capture application that can help users very quickly manage image capture of their Windows OS desktop area, with dedicated tools for not only intuitive and detailed area capture but also extensive options for file preparation and exporting. What's more, we are confident that once you have tried it, you will probably never bother with any other screen capture method for your day-to-day needs. Verdict:Īs it is free of charge, there is simply no reason not to try out Sniptool. Grabs can be saved in JPG, BMP, TIF or PNG formats which has most eventualities covered. There is also the option of having images copied to the clipboard so they can be pasted into documents as required. It is possible to put a time delay on screenshots to make it easier to grab a particular on-screen event, and you can customize where images and video captures are saved. When it comes to video (MPEG) and GIF capture, there are no editing options, but this is not really to be expected. This is a handy way of preventing other people from stealing your images and passing them off as their own. If you're adding the screenshots you take to a website, or need to make them identifiable for other reasons, you have the option of adding watermarks. There's also a blur option for obscuring sections of an image if required. The editor is basic, but it includes all of the essential image editing tools you would expect and are likely to need for screenshot markup and tweaking – the likes of pens tools, shapes, overlays, stamps, arrows and so on. When you're capturing standard screenshots, you can have them automatically open in the built-in editor for further work, or just save them as they are. Think Windows' Snipping Tool on steroids, and you're getting close to understanding what Sniptool is like. These options enable you to capture moving footage of on-screen action. But where things get interesting is with MPEG and animated GIF capture. It can be used to grab the entire screen, a selectable rectangle, the current window, and more – each with its own keyboard shortcut for ease and speed. Sniptool has a very similar feel to the Snipping Tool that is built into Windows 10, but it take things a little further. You could keep thing super simple and just use the Print Screen key on your keyboard, of course, but it's nice to have access to a few extra options without the need to resort to an image editor. Screen capture tools are pretty plentiful, and even Microsoft has seen fit to include one in Windows 10. The Classical Age: First UpgradesĪs your villagers poke and prod their way into the Classical Age, a great number of upgrades become available at once. Meanwhile, if you have scored well during attacks thus far, players of a higher level are sent to your base in search of resources and glory. Several new and significant buildings, a fifth house, and a number of interesting units with special combat functions become available. However, things begin to change during the Classical and Medieval Ages, when raids become an actual threat and upgrades are slow enough to warrant careful prioritization. Buildings and upgrades will progress at a steady rate and you will likely never get attacked by another player. An example of this would be placing your Garrisons in the area of effect so that you can get the most out of the bonuses given you by the Acropolis.Up to and including the Iron Age, your village in DomiNations will be fairly quiet. There actually is none, just as long as your buildings are positioned the right way. There is no real right or wrong answer to the question – what is the best DomiNations best design that would ensure a lot of defensive protection. Lastly, place your buildings of great importance inside the walls, and your less important ones outside, to allow those comparatively unimportant buildings to serve as decoys. Third, make sure your walls are regularly upgraded. Second, place your gates in such a way that your defenders can reach your attackers, regardless of the direction they’re marching in. First would be to build more chambers, which would essentially mean confounding your enemies by forcing them to go through different layers of walls in order to get to your buildings. Walls are still the classic defensive structure, and when creating your walls to protect your base, you should keep a few things in mind. It would actually be better to leave your Town Center out in the open, which would leave it vulnerable to enemies, but then again, what you should do here is to protect your resources. That may sound like the obvious choice as the best DomiNations strategy for defending your town center, but it isn’t. Now, you may think that it would be a very good idea to surround your Town Center with walls. Some wonders would be able to help you improve your defense passively, and we would personally recommend the Acropolis as the best defensive building in DomiNations. Anyone looking for a head start on defense should always go with the Japanese. Defensive Prowess Depends On The NationĮach of the seven nations in DomiNations has their own strengths and weaknesses, and Japan happens to be the nation that is strongest on the defensive end. First of all, you should have a plan in mind when expanding your base, and that plan should ideally include clearing the forests in such a way that you’ll have a square design for your base. This is one of the more important things you need to do to create a good base and keep it well-defended at all times. This isn’t always the easiest thing to do, so for this latest set of DomiNations tips and strategies, we shall talk about the best ways to defend your base from the bad guys. It’s a lot of fun to beat the enemy and head back to the base with your loot, but it won’t do you any good if you can’t defend your base against the opposition. Of course, you’ll want to attack other players and grab as much booty as you could. Playing offense in Nexon M’s iOS/Android title DomiNations is all well and good. Research the positionīefore the interview, research the position and company to help you prepare your response to this question. Here are some steps you can take to answer this question: 1. How to answer "What are your goals for the first 30, 60 and 90 days?"Īn effective answer to this interview question can help you show employers how you plan to use your skills, experience or training to make an impact in your new role. A specific and well-researched answer to this interview question can help distinguish you from other candidates interviewing for the position. This type of response can help you show your interest in the position and your commitment to working hard to do the job well. You can prepare an effective answer by researching the company and the position and describing the realistic goals you have for your first three months in the role. When you answer this interview question, your response can help employers envision the role you may have in the company as an employee. They may also ask this question to determine how well you understand the duties and expectations of the position. They want to know how quickly you can adjust to the job and the company. Employers often ask this interview question to gauge how you might transition to a new position. During this time, new employees learn about their specific job duties, company processes and the culture of the organization. Torties are believed to be bringers of good fortune. However, the said study did not find a direct link between coat color and temperament or personality. Incidentally, most tortie cat owners agree that these cats were diva-like, high-energy and may tend to be aggressive at times. A study made by UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital on the link between a cat’s coat color and behavior suggests that torties have distinct and sassy temperaments, also commonly called “tortitude”. These cats are known to be independent, loyal to their owners but may also tend to be hot-tempered at times. Torties have distinctive temperaments.ĭespite not being a specific breed, most cat experts agree that torties have distinctive temperaments and personalities. Female torties have two sets of genetic information that determine cat color resulting in black and orange coat color variations while male torties have one X and one Y chromosome, indicating that they can only be orange or black and not both colors. This is mostly due to genetics since the chromosomes that determine a cat’s gender also determine the coat colors.įemale sex chromosome X carries the genetic code for black and orange colors while the male sex chromosome Y does not carry coat color information. These male torties are usually sterile with a shorter lifespan while fertile male torties are extremely rare. Torties are almost always female while there may only be one male tortie in every 3,000 female torties. Most torties are females and males are very rare. Also, torties have bridled fur colors if they appear to be woven together and patched fur colors if they appear in large sections throughout the body. The chimera coat style features one color on one side and a different color on the other side of the body and it may be on the face or entire body. Mosaic features a traditional color combination that is randomly mixed. Torties have striking coat styles called mosaic and chimera. Here are some fascinating facts about torties: 1. Interesting facts about tortoiseshell cats Some of the breeds that can show the tortoiseshell pattern include the following: Those cats with dominant white patches are usually called tricolor or calico in the USA and Canada while in the UK it is commonly called tortoiseshell and white. Torties with the tabby pattern are called torbies and traditional torties are particolored cats with little or no white markings at all. The patches of torties may be orange, yellow or cream while the black may be chocolate, gray, blue or tabby. Others have less intense colors because of genetics while there are those with chocolate-colored and dark fur. They are not a particular breed and these cats have primarily black, red and orange fur and usually brown mixed in. Tortoiseshell cats are named because of their unique multicolor fur that resembles a tortoiseshell. If you adopt a tortie from a local pet shelter it usually does not come with a high price tag, What is a tortoiseshell cat? Nevertheless, you can always check your local pet shelters for torties that are ready for adoption. Tortie cats that come from Russia and other faraway countries may also cost higher than those that came from the US. A purebred tortie may cost higher than the others and a fertile male tortie may cost up to $2000 or more because of its rarity. The price may vary depending on the breed, age, place of purchase and if special breeding practices were used. Tortoiseshell or tortie cats usually cost around $1000 to $2000 and the price can be on the more expensive end if they have striking coat color combinations. Thus, the Gestalt principle of similarity benefits visual perception, but it can provide benefits to VWM as well. In short, the VWM performance benefit derived from similarity was constrained by spatial proximity, such that similar items need to be near each other. Experiment 2 replicated and extended this finding by showing that similarity was only effective when the similar stimuli were proximal. The principle of similarity grouping the elements by size is another cornerstone in creating intuitive and user-friendly interfaces as it establishes the basis for strong visual hierarchy supporting users. Experiment 1 established the basic finding that VWM performance could benefit from grouping. Basically, Gestalt is the term that comes from the German word Gestalt talt meaning «shape, form». Here, we investigated whether grouping by similarity benefits VWM. The 6 Gestalt principles Similarity The Gestalt principle of similarity states that humans will naturally group any items we look after spotting similarities between them. However, one prevalent Gestalt principle, similarity, has not been examined with regard to facilitating VWM. Six commonly used Gestalt principles today include similarity, continuity, closure, proximity, figure-ground, and symmetry. This introduces the question, do these perceptual benefits extend to VWM? If so, can this be an approach to enhance VWM function by optimizing the processing of information? Previous findings have demonstrated that several Gestalt principles (connectedness, common region, and spatial proximity) do facilitate VWM performance in change detection tasks (Jiang, Olson, & Chun, 2000 Woodman, Vecera, & Luck, 2003 Xu, 2002, 2006 Xu & Chun, 2007). Visual perception processing is facilitated by Gestalt principles of grouping, such as connectedness, similarity, and proximity. Visual working memory (VWM) is essential for many cognitive processes, yet it is notably limited in capacity. It involves attaching 1 x 1 bricks with studs on 2 adjacent sides to 1 x 1 technic bricks with holes. It would be considered illegal (strictly speaking) but works well enough. When I originally designed this model, I decided to focus on finding a solution for the corners, and here is the technique I came up with. It is still not clear what we can do about the corners where we will need tall stacks of 1 x 1 bricks with no easy way to attach them to the main structure. But if we were to make our walls two studs thick, we can have bricks or plates placed horizontally in the inner layer that is hidden from view. These would span the entire height of the tower and there would be no way to add any tan horizontal cross-members (needed to hold the model together) at least in the outer layer of bricks. In LEGO terms, if we were to use tan for the wall color, we would only see tall stacks of tan bricks that are 1-stud wide between the banks of windows on the outside of the model. Looking at pictures of the Empire State Building, we see that the windows alternating with the gray accent panels form unbroken vertical lines on the exterior of the building. Next, we look at how the walls of the main tower are actually built. We had determined the scale ( 1/230) we were going to be using for the model and what that translated to, in terms of LEGO dimensions for the main tower ( 30 x 22 studs). This is done more out of necessity than anything else, because the small scale they are using doesn’t allow for regular walls created by stacking bricks.Ĭontinuing with my process for designing LEGO models of skyscrapers, we return to the example I was using in Part I – the “main tower” of the Empire State State Building. They have internal structures usually built out of technic elements, wrapped with external facades that are composed of plates and other elements like 1 x 2 grille tiles. The 1/650 scale models of skyscrapers built by Spencer Rezkalla and Rocco Buttliere hew closer to real skyscrapers in terms of how they are built. The reason of course, is that it is a lot easier with LEGO to simply stack bricks, than it is to try to mimic the structure of a real skyscraper. The models are hollow for the most part, with no internal framework to support the walls. Ironically, my LEGO models of skyscrapers are built very much like conventional masonry structures with walls created by stacking bricks. These exterior walls form the facade of the building but don’t actually support any weight. Instead, they have a steel framework to which “curtain walls” made of brick, stone or glass are attached. Michigan Avenue (John Hancock Center)ĭo you know how modern skyscrapers are different from the tall buildings that preceded them (like the Philadelphia City Hall which was the tallest building in the world from 1894 to 1908) ? Unlike masonry-built tall buildings, skyscrapers don’t have load-bearing walls. Different versions of Empire State Building.I have tried to create (what I hope will be) the definitive LEGO versions of some of the most iconic American skyscrapers and this website intends to not only showcase these models but also provide some insights into my design process, the challenges I have encountered, interesting building techniques I have used, etc. A number of other considerations also come into play when designing a LEGO model – picking the right scale, ensuring the structural integrity and portability of the model, optimizing the use of LEGO pieces based on their cost and availability, etc. A significant amount of research and planning is required in order to translate the dimensions of a real building to LEGO bricks (while preserving its overall shape and proportions). However, building LEGO models (or MOCs as AFOLs such as myself like to call them) that represent real skyscrapers with a high degree of accuracy involves much more than just stacking bricks. After all, what kid playing with LEGO hasn’t stacked these bricks as high as they could to try to create their own skyscrapers ? Using LEGO (the colorful plastic bricks that we all know and love) to build models of skyscrapers (which are among the pinnacles of human achievement – quite literally!) may seem like a no-brainer. |
